If you are an entrepreneur starting a new venture, if you are an investor looking to invest in a new startup, if you are a boss managing a company, if you are a CEO leading a business, everything you do matters.

Great leaders share a combination of traits and behaviors. The good news for the rest of us is that they're things we can emulate and practice every day:

Lead With Vision. When you have an incredible vision and you are able to convey it to others, your leadership will matter because it comes from the strength of purpose.

Lead With Communication. When you remember that communication is a two-way street and you express your vision and ideas to others and take time to listen to their concerns and ideas, your leadership matters because it is fueled by true communication.

Lead With Value. When you work from the perspective of bringing value to your colleagues, customers, and clients, your leadership matters because it reflects that you care.

Lead With Recognition. When you appreciate and recognize those who work for you and recognize their hard work, your leadership matters because you treat people the way you know they should be treated.

Lead With Connecting. When you surround yourself with good people and invest time in building genuine relationships, your leadership matters because it extends beyond your personal strengths.

Lead With Character. When your leadership is rooted in character, your leadership matters because it reflects your integrity.

Lead With Empowerment. When you instill confidence in others, your leadership matters because you empower them to take ownership of their work.

Lead With Questions. When you lead with questions, your leadership matters because you're willing to admit you don't have all the answers.

Lead With Efficiency: When every goal is actionable and important and the reason for every decision is understood, your leadership will matter because it is based in your belief in creating a future.

Your leadership does not matter until it is built on the things that matter. Great leadership is synonymous with high-performing companies, teams, and businesses.

The more you invest in leadership, the better decisions you will make, the more you will get done in less time and with less cost, and the more you will achieve with better results.

When you can make what you do matter, you are being the kind of leader that matters.

What Nobody Tells You About Being an Entrepreneur

At this very moment, a significant number of people are dreaming about leaving their jobsand going into business for themselves.

These fantasies are fed by all the times we've been told to believe in ourselves, to embrace the American dream of going our own way and doing it for ourselves.

There's no doubt that leaving behind a routine job and becoming your own boss is exciting, and many of those who set off on that path find personal and professional fulfillment there.

But in any endeavor, reality is better preparation than fantasy. And when it comes to entrepreneurship, the reality is complicated.

Here are some of the things you don't hear about it--but should:

There's a dark side. The sad truth is up to 90 percent of new businesses--including entrepreneurial startups--fail within a few years. It's inspiring to hear about an Amazon or a Zappos, but the risk of not making it is real.

Passion alone won't cut it. We've heard it a thousand times: Passion will prevail. And that's true, but only up to a point. In the long haul, success has a lot more to do with less exciting character traits: patience and endurance.

It takes years of hard work to build a business. Many believe that entrepreneurship means shorter hours and more free time. In reality, entrepreneurship means building your business carefully and faithfully day by day over a period of years. If there's a true secret to success, it's hard work, period. Or, more accurately, very hard work. Being in business for yourself is definitely rewarding, but you have to be ready to work harder than you've ever worked for anyone else.

Isolation is a fact of entrepreneurial life. The thought of flying solo is exciting--but it can also be stressful and even lonely. When you work for an established business, you have a trusted network of colleagues to tap into for feedback, a safety net of shared responsibility, and the chance to connect with familiar people during the workday. Isolation is a significant factor in the lives of most entrepreneurs.

To lead others, you must manage yourself. In the popular imagination, entrepreneurship is just about having an idea. But successful businesses--even those with just a single employee--have great leadership. And the best leaders know, above all, how to manage themselves.

You probably won't get rich. Another misconception is that entrepreneurship is a good path for becoming filthy rich. The rewards are many--but if what you're ultimately looking for is wealth, creating a business is probably not the best way to go about it.

A crisis of confidence is probably in your future. Entrepreneurs are generally confident people who hold deep convictions. But for most of them, at some point, the responsibility and high stakes combine to create a devastating loss of certainty in themselves and their work. When you feel hopeless--and you will--you have to be able to work hard to overcome any self-doubt, any feeling of doom, or any situation that feels overwhelming.

Don't fake it, ever. I leave this to the last because I feel it's the most important. "Fake it till you make it" is a popular mantra, but I believe in the integrity of being what you are in the moment. The secret of success is to be yourself--flaws and all.

Entrepreneurship isn't for everyone, and that's OK.

But those with the heart of an entrepreneur will always go through life making more opportunities than they find. They will overcome more challenges than they ever thought they'd be capable of and--above all--they never confuse a defeat with a final defeat.

Message for Southeast Asia’s brick-and-mortar retailers: E-commerce companies could soon be eating your lunch.

That’s according to a recent study by UBS UBSN.VX +0.06%, which showed the region’s consumers are already flocking to e-commerce sites at the expense of traditional retailers’ platforms.

Internet penetration in the populous region is higher than many assume, and will soon skyrocket thanks to the increasing use of low-cost smartphones and the availability of mobile Web connections, according UBS’s head of research and strategy in Thailand, Raymond Maguire, who authored the report.

That threatens traditional retailers, since Southeast Asia’s consumers are already visiting online retailers 41 times for every single visit to traditional platforms, despite obstacles such as poor retail logistics systems and limited credit card usage. Online retailers, which have already gained market share on brick and mortar stores, will flourish as more and more users get Web access, Maguire writes in the report, which was released last month to UBS’s clients.

“The power balance has already tipped to the online platforms,” Maguire said. “The traditional retailers really have to get their act together.”

While he noted the region still lacks significant price disrupting online retailers that offer goods at deep discounts, he identified Lazada, Rocket Internet‘s Southeast Asia Amazon clone, as being popular in many markets. Maguire also pointed out that companies making in-roads in the region include Chinese ecommerce giant Alibabaand Japan’s biggest online retailer, Rakuten.

While online shopping in Southeast Asia only accounts for 0.2% of all retail sales now, if it rises to 5%, the market could be worth some $21.8 billion. By comparison, in China, e-commerce accounts for 8% of retail sales.

In what he says is a first, Maguire analyzed traffic from the 10,000 most popular retailing sites in individual markets using big data algorithms. He found that visits to e-commerce sites were far higher than to traditional retailers, which accounted for just 2.4% of visits.

Maguire likens Southeast Asia now to China between 2006 and 2008, when Internet penetration more than doubled as multitudes of consumers snapped up PCs equipped with broadband connections, leading to the rise of successful e-commerce firms.

Indeed, some 199 million people in Southeast Asia are now online, Maguire reckons. That is significantly higher than an estimate by market-research company comScore last year, which put the number at 62 million.

Maguire projects the number of people online in Southeast Asia will rise 48% to 294 million in just three years. Meanwhile, Internet penetration across Southeast Asia now stands at 32%, and will rise to 48% by 2017, he estimates.

Switching to Linux Saved Munich City Tens of Millions

It may have taken the best part of a decade, but the City of Munich says its decision to switch to open-source software has saved an estimated ten million Euros.

Not that this saving happened over night. The city first began to seek an open-source antidote to its Microsoft dependence in 2003. With some 1.5 million citizens, thousands of employees, and tens of thousands of government workstations to consider, its initial shopping list was suitably strict, spanning everything from avoiding vendor lock-in and receiving regular hardware support updates to having access to a wide array of free applications.

Its first stage of migration in 2006 saw Debian rolled out across a small percentage of workstations, with the remaining Windows computers switching to OpenOffice.org, Firefox and Thunderbird.

Debian was swapped for a custom Ubuntu-based distribution named ‘LiMux‘ in 2008 after the team handling the project ‘realised Ubuntu was the platform that could satisfy our requirements best.’

LiMux is currently based on Kubuntu 10.04 LTS

LiMux version 4 is the current release and is based on Kubuntu 10.04 LTS so uses the KDE 3.5 desktop by default. The upcoming release of LiMux 5 will be based on Kubuntu 12.04 LTS and will use KDE 4.

The entire migration process was announced as ‘complete’ in 2013.

€10,000,000 Saved and Counting

So how much did the City of Munich save by ditching Windows for FOSS-friendly software? Based on reports given to the media the project has saved at least €10 million over the duration of the migration.

This number reportedly includes both the cost of hiring of external companies to assist, manage and implement workarounds, plus the internal cost of investing in training, management and support.

Despite there still being a cost (no, it’s not as simple as popping a LiveCD into the tray of each PC and hoping for the best) the saving is still evident:

• Switching to open-source: €23 million
• Upgrading to/licensing Windows 7 & Microsoft Office: €34 million (estimated)

These figures also don’t take into account the long term savings to be had from not being tied to a specific manufacturer or support team. The flexibility, dependability and stability of open-source software means further savings are almost guaranteed.

Peter Hofmann, project manager for the City of Munich, told Canonical of the switch:

“By combining the low costs and freedom of open source software with ongoing support for the hardware and applications we need, it was one of the critical elements to the success of this project. Most important was the backing of our politicians throughout the project.”

The City of Munich has been at the forefront of pushing adoption of open-source solutions. Last year it began distributing free Ubuntu 12.04 LTS CDs to residents in lieu of the (then) impending Windows XP end of life.
